Haydn composed The Seven Last Words in 1786 to accompany the liturgy of the long Good Friday ceremony in Cádiz. Later, he adapted this cycle of seven sonatas, all with a slow tempo for string quartet, which is the version presented here. The intensity of this work expressing the final agony of Christ enables the listener to ignore the absence of text in this music, yet purely instrumental.
On the other hand, Dominique Vellard undertook to set these texts to music, having unsuccessfully sought for any sort of musical setting of the Seven Last Words that might serve as an introduction to Haydn’s work. His Sept dernières paroles are strongly influenced by early music, while also being nourished by his attentive listening to music from other traditions. The Ensemble Gilles Binchois and the Quatuor Debussy have come together to put these two works into perspective in a beautiful album, recorded in the crypt of Lagorce.

En 1786, Haydn compose ses Seven Last Words, à l’intention de la liturgie de la cérémonie du Vendredi saint donnée à Cadiz. Originellement destiné à un effectif orchestral, il l’adapte un peu plus tard pour quatuor à cordes, version présentée ici. Dans ce cycle de sept sonates à tempo lent, Haydn parvient à exprimer avec une grande intensité les derniers moments du Christ sur la croix, chaque mouvement étant introduit, par son titre, avec ses dernières paroles. La force de cette musique instrumentale parvient à faire oublier l’absence de texte dans cette musique de pure abstraction.
Plus tard, Dominique Vellard entreprend de mettre en musique ces dernières paroles, n’ayant pu trouver dans le répertoire aucune mise en musique en mesure d’introduire l’œuvre de Haydn. Ses Sept dernières paroles sont à la fois influencées par la musique ancienne et par l’écoute attentive des musiques issues d’autres traditions. Ici, le Quatuor Debussy et l’ensemble Gilles Binchois mettent ces deux œuvres en regard dans un très bel album enregistré dans la crypte de Lagorce, fidèle à la création originale du cycle de Haydn
